“I want to say, look, religion is not about “believing that God exists” any more than marriage is about “believing that my spouse exists”. Indeed, the assumption that you can intellectualize religion, that its most important parts are about believing a set of propositions, is just so wrong that I don’t know how to go about saying what it is about to someone who only cares about the propositions. Sure, there are propositions involved, just as with a marriage: “My spouse is beautiful in the mornings as his hair catches the sun”; or “I fell in love with my spouse that day we saw the ducks”; or “My spouse would never betray me.” But nobody wants to hear that; they only want to hear the equivalent of “My spouse exists”; and “My spouse is better than his spouse”; and “No, my spouse isn’t an axe-murderer.” And when they say, “Ok, fine, tell me how you fell in love with your spouse,” I just know that if I do, I’ll be treated to explanations of why I don’t have enough evidence to think my spouse really loves me back, and how foolish it seems to trust another person that much.” thomb: Why the religion discussions bother me
